Landforms
The Great Plains region of Texas is part of the larger Great Plains of North America. The 3 separate areas in this region include the High Plains, the Edward Plateau, and the Llano Basin. The landforms in these areas include plains, plateaus , canyons , escarpments , and basins . |
Weather
The climate in this region is varied. This is the coldest region during the winter but during the summer it can be very hot. The average yearly rainfall is 15 – 20 inches. This region can be very dry and windy and as a result there can be violent sand storms. |
Three Major Cities
Midland- Midland was originally founded as the midway point between Forth Worth and El Paso on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881. Amarillo- Amarillo is the fourteenth most populous city in the state of Texas, the largest in the Texas Panhandle and the seat of Potter County. Kerrville- Being nestled in the hills of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is best known for its beautiful parks that line the Guadalupe River - which runs directly through the city. |
Attractions
Hardeman County Museum- The museum is a former jail where the original cells can be visited. Lyndon B. Johnson State Park- This park contains 717.9 acres of flora and fauna. Visitors to this park will be able to see buffaloes, white-tailed deer and bison. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area- The lake has a large artificial reservoir that is used for fishing, boating and swimming. The park itself has a camping area and is a popular spot for hunting. |
Culture
The culture in the great plains can be very diverse as it is very mixed. In the great plains there is an accent of English that elongates certain letters in the dictionary. Another part of food culture in the great plain is barbecue. Unlike in the rest of America which barbecue is mainly in use of pork, Texas barbecue is very dependent on beef. Clothing in this region is also a little bit thicker than the other regions of Texas. |
Economy and Industry
Ranching- is a large industry in the Great Plains. Sheep, cattle, and goats are raised here and the short grass of the prairie is used for grazing. Oil and Gas- is another major industry. Both oil and natural gas can be found in this region and drilling for it employs many people. Farming- is also a major part of the region's economy. Farmers use irrigation from wells and the rich soil of the prairie to grow cotton and wheat. |

The industry in the Great Plains is most likely influenced by the regions placement. It is mostly rural land and is useful for drilling for oil, ranching, and farming. The people in this region are probably are affected by the the industries. I believe this,because they can be influenced by the jobs. They may learn more about those jobs and become ready for those jobs naturally. The culture of this region can be affected by the weather. The people of this region can become use to wearing thicker clothes than other parts of Texas as though it is hot but it gets cooler than the other regions. |
